Drama Club 2013 - 2014 Program Information
Drama Club at Hanalei School - 2013-2014
The Hanalei School PTSA and MUSIC * ARTS * MOVEMENT are proud to present another year of the Drama Club at Hanalei School! This year the Drama Club program will be focused on the production of a dramatic musical theater performance (based on “Cinderella”) in the spring semester. We will work with the 5th and 6th graders to adapt and rewrite a script, making it reflect our island cultures, writing in local names and interpretations, and weaving in some relevant local issues. We will then continue with this group to rehearse and produce the final presentation in the spring.
Our projected timeline and structure for the program are as follows:
We will meet for Drama Club after school at least one day per week, and occasionally two days per week when appropriate and possible. Our regular meeting days will be Fridays, from 2:05 until 4:00. When appropriate, we will also meet on some Thursdays from 2:05 until 4:00. Meeting and Rehearsal schedules will be sent home with students, and will also be posted and updated here on our MUSIC * ARTS * MOVEMENT website.
We would like to start the program as soon as possible, beginning Friday, December 6. Applications will be due by Wednesday, November 27 (application form below for reference, please turn in to Mr. McGill or his box in the office). We will continue to meet every week until the final performances, after which we will have one final meeting to reflect on and celebrate our successes!
Auditions will be held when we return from winter break, and roles will be assigned shortly after. As was the custom in the past, we will give priority for leading parts to the 6th grade students, although casting depends largely on the audition process, and we will try to pick the best candidate for each role. All students in the Drama Club will have opportunities to participate in a variety of ways, from adapting the script to helping make sets and producing the show.
Who we are:
MUSIC * ARTS * MOVEMENT is Ryan and Jimena McGill. We have worked together for over 5 years to support creativity and the arts, and to create opportunities for children to participate in the arts. We are both teachers, and we love to share our love for the arts with young people. We are very grateful for this opportunity to work with your children and to have fun and be creative together! Mahalo nui loa to the Hanalei School PTA for all their support and encouragement! They make these enrichment programs possible!
We both love to work with students of all ages. However, this program will be best suited to students in the upper grades.
Our goals are to support the students in developing and expressing their creativity and talents in the performing arts: dance, music, and theater. We are so happy to support drama and the performing arts at Hanalei School, and hopefully we can continue supporting this program in the future.
Our curriculum will include:

Our projected timeline and structure for the program are as follows:
- November 2013 – begin club, enlist interested 5th and 6th graders (permission slips will be sent home after applications are submitted).
- December 2013 – the focus will be on adapting and rewriting the script. Our regular meeting time will be on Fridays from 2:05 to 4:00, and some Thursdays from 2:05 to 4:00. Ryan and Jimena will finalize the script over the winter break, to be ready for auditions (and rehearsals) in January.
- January and February 2014 – We will hold auditions and assign roles when we return from the break (early January). Rehearsals will be scheduled, with different groupings of students depending on the focus of the rehearsal session. Students will work with us to rehearse and produce the production, helping to create costumes, props, sets, scenery, and choreography. Parent support will be very helpful in these stages!
- March and April 2014 – Final rehearsal schedule and Performances! We plan to do two performances at the Hanalei School cafeteria, on April 25 and 26, 2014. We will follow past production practices, selling tickets to raise funds for supporting the Drama program, and hiring lighting experts to help make the performance spectacular! We will also figure out how to video the performance (that we can later copy and distribute to participants). Parents will sign up and be expected to participate in supporting the production and performances (Mahalo!)
