Hanalei School Drama Club 2013-2014
The Hanalei School PTSA and MUSIC * ARTS * MOVEMENT are proud to present another year of the Drama Club at Hanalei School! This year the Drama Club program will be focused on the production of a dramatic musical theater performance titled "The Life of Sandershella" (based on “Cinderella”) in the spring semester. We will work with the 5th and 6th graders to adapt and rewrite a script, making it reflect our island cultures, writing in local names and interpretations, and weaving in some relevant local issues. We will then continue with this group to rehearse and produce the final presentation in the spring.
You can find more information about what we are up to, schedules, news, and important notices on the various pages under the "Drama Club" tab above. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Our regular meeting time will be on Fridays from 2:05 to 5:00. We will usually be meeting in the Library, and students can wait for pickup by the wave at 5:00.
Our projected timeline and structure for the program are as follows:
Meeting and Rehearsal schedules will be sent home with students, and will also be posted and updated on our MUSIC * ARTS * MOVEMENT website.
Expectations and Behavior:
All students in the Drama Club will have opportunities to participate in a variety of ways, from adapting the script to helping make sets and producing the show.
Because our time is limited, and because Drama is a cooperative group activity that depends on the participation and cooperation of all members, we will be expecting all students in the Drama Club to participate consistently in the program, and to cooperate and interact positively with their peers and adults. We will try to keep students engaged and busy, but they also have to be self-directed and responsible, even when they are waiting or without an assigned duty. To make this consistent and fair for everyone involved, we will be using a “3 strikes” discipline plan. Students will be redirected and given warnings for small behavior issues, but disrespectful behavior or put-downs (even if “joking”) to peers or adults will result in a “strike.” Also, missing a meeting or rehearsal which they are supposed to attend will result in a “strike.” We do not anticipate this will be an issue, but to be fair to the members who are participating and working hard to produce this show together, if a participant gets 3 “strikes,” they will be dismissed from the Drama Club Program. We will call the parents if any student gets a “strike,” so we can work together to prevent the process going any further. Please be sure to review this information with your child, and we will be going over it in detail with them, so that everyone understands the high expectations we have for working together cooperatively to have fun and put on a great show!
Again, Mahalo for your support. If you have any questions, please contact us at: musicartsmovement@gmail.com

Our projected timeline and structure for the program are as follows:
- November 2013 – begin club, enlist interested 5th and 6th graders (application sent home, and permission slips will be sent home after applications are submitted).
- December 2013 – the focus will be on adapting and rewriting the script. Our regular meeting time will be on Fridays from 2:05 to 4:00, and some Thursdays from 2:05 to 4:00. Ryan and Jimena will finalize the script over the winter break, to be ready for auditions (and rehearsals) in January.
- January and February 2014 – We will hold auditions and assign roles when we return from the break (early January). Rehearsals will be scheduled, with different groupings of students depending on the focus of the rehearsal session. Students will work with us to rehearse and produce the production, helping to create costumes, props, sets, scenery, and choreography. Parent support will be very helpful in these stages!
- March and April 2014 – Final rehearsal schedule and Performances! We plan to do two performances at the Hanalei School cafeteria, on April 25 and 26, 2014. We will follow past production practices, selling tickets to raise funds for supporting the Drama program, and hiring lighting experts to help make the performance spectacular! We will also figure out how to video the performance (that we can later copy and distribute to participants). Parents will sign up and be expected to participate in supporting the production and performances (Mahalo!)
